Reasons we Should Listen to and Respect the 99%
Why is there so much negativity toward a group whom fights on behalf of all people, who has put their time and energy into the system that has failed them and who will be there for all those in need when the system completely falls apart?
The occupy movement of the United States is a group largely defined as; dirty, hippies, drug addicts, rapists, homeless, worthless, jobless, or as of lately the worst title, Terrorists. There are some truths to these titles. As there is almost always a bad apple to be found in the orchard, however not all of these titles are as demeaning as the right-wing’s mass media try to make us believe.
These "jobless, dirty, homeless, hippies" are out there arguing on behalf of the entire country. These are the same people, old and young, who have either struggled on their own to find the balance of finding happiness and the pursuit therein, or have lived a childhood watching their parents and loved ones battle the same demons. "Get a Job!" the right-wing screams. "Give us a Job!" the majority screams.
The system has continually failed these 99%, and they have either accepted it, or they are still in denial. Going to school, getting student loans, praying there will be a job opening in their field when they graduate. Hoping they made enough connections to get their foot in the door so they can jump on the rollercoaster of life and lasso themselves the American dream. Unfortunately about 70% of students who graduate this year from college will not find a job in the field they have studied. All the while, tuition costs are rising, cost of living is rising, and consumer goods are rising in price. While the national average wage has stayed roughly the same for 40 years and the average CEO now makes 350 times more money than the lowest paid worker of their company.
I know, it’s insane so insane, that thousands of these hardworking and proud American citizens have taken to the streets to represent the ones who can’t speak for themselves, or the ones who have been intimidated by the system. When we first took to the streets, to occupy public spaces we simply wanted to let the government know that we were aware of the failure of the monetary system, and that we wanted our grievances to be addressed. The constitution states clearly that we can do this. While the mayors, governors, senators, and the most powerful figures in America… the bankers, decide to plot out an attack on the constitution and destroy the hard work our fore fathers put in for our freedom. As I speak the people of power are pushing to allow American citizens to be indefinitely detained and held without charges in a military prison. These are just a few of the reasons we occupy.
Regardless of how you view the "occupiers" in your local park, or in front of your city hall, if or when the system decides to go out of its way to violate your rights, these representatives of the 99% are the ones who will be there to provide you with shelter and food. They will be the ones hanging a lantern high on the hill to signal that the attack from the government will be by land. They will accept you. They will appreciate you. They will guide you.
If having a group whom fights on behalf of all people, who has put their time and energy into the system that has failed them , who will be there for all those in need when the system completely falls apart isn’t enough reason for more tolerance of this group then I’ll give you one last good reason.
99%ers should be looked at with dignity and pride. No matter how many times they get beat, shot, gassed, or pepper sprayed by police, they say "We love you". Even in the face of the strongest opposition they can find it within themselves to love their oppressor.
